The Master of the Arena side quest in The Witcher 3 offers a creative subversion of traditional monster hunting. Located in the Skellige Isles on the island of Spikeroog, this level 14 quest challenges players to solve a supernatural nuisance through patience rather than brute force. Successfully completing it reopens the fighting arena and provides Geralt with extra coin.

Starting the Quest in Hov

To begin this side mission, Geralt must travel to the village of Hov situated on Spikeroog. Near the local fighting grounds, you will encounter guards in a watchtower discussing a spectral problem haunting their arena. Speaking with the guards beforehand ensures you unlock the maximum potential coin reward once the arena is restored.

Understanding Ulle the Unlucky's Curse

Upon entering the arena grounds, you will encounter Ulle the Unlucky, a weary wraith condemned to haunt the ring. Historically, Ulle killed a jarl who constantly mocked his losses, prompting the jarl to curse him to lose for eternity. Defeating Ulle in combat only causes him to reappear days later, leaving the curse unbroken.

How to Lift the Spectral Curse

To banish Ulle permanently, Geralt must intentionally let the ghost win the duel. When the fight commences, sheath your weapon or hold up your guard without attacking back until Ulle defeats you. Overjoyed by achieving his first victory, Ulle will thank Geralt and peacefully ascend to the afterlife.

Collecting Your Rewards

After the spirit vanishes, return to the guards overlooking the arena to inform them that the ghost is gone. They will pay an initial sum of 15 crowns and invite you back once business resumes. Meditate or fast travel away for a few days before returning to claim your final portion of the arena proceeds.
